GENERAL SUMMARY
Make yourself at home in Manhattan in a cozy, pre-war, two-room studio apartment. Guests have exclusive access to the entire apartment, which is located in one of the City's safest and most stunning neighborhoods. The quiet, well-maintained elevator building is home to a mix of Columbia University graduate students and faculty (and their families) and local residents who have been in the area for years.
THE SPACE
The apartment comfortably sleeps two adults-- one on a quite sturdy, twin-sized loft bed and another on an IKEA couch long enough to stretch out on. Pre-war high ceilings lend the two-room studio a feeling of additional space.
GUEST ACCESS
Guests have access to the entire studio-- bed/sitting room, workstation, bathroom, and kitchen with full-sized appliances. Washers and dryers are located in the building's basement, as is garbage and recycling collection.
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
I will be out of the country conducting field research as part of my doctoral program in Anthropology; guests, then, will have complete privacy in the apartment, though I will, of course, be accessible (most easily by email), and at attentive Superintendent and maintenance staff are available to call in case of need.
TRANSPORTATION
This apartment is two short blocks from the uptown and downtown 1 subway trains, which will get you all the way from the southernmost to the northernmost points in Manhattan-- and beyond, if you care to venture into Brooklyn or the Bronx. Additionally, you can pick up one of several busses on Broadway.
MORE ABOUT THE AREA
Morningside Heights, just on the southern end of vibrant Harlem and just north of the Upper West Side, is one of Manhattan's most unique and beautiful neighborhoods. Safe, spacious, and beloved by Columbia students and faculty, the area is easily accessible by bus and by 24-hour subway lines that will get guests anywhere in Manhattan within minutes.
The beautiful Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is at one end of the block, and the famous facade of the 'Seinfeld Restaurant,' Tom's, is at the other. In between are a fantastic independent book-shop and a post office, and Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, with late-night and 24/7 grocery stores and pharmacies and almost no end to eat-in and fast-casual restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, run on either side of the block.
Familiar eating and grocery options within four blocks include Westside Market, Duane Reade, H-Mart, Starbucks, Five Guys, Chipotle, Shake Shack, Pinkberry, Haagen Dazs, Joe's Coffee, Sweetgreen, and Dig Inn. Local favorites include Community Food and Juice, Koronet Pizza (for gigantic New York slices), the Hungarian Pastry Shop, Mel's Burger Bar, Absolute Bagels, Le Monde, and The Heights Bar and Grill.
The Ivy League's Columbia University, with its 'urban oasis' campus, is just up Broadway, and three parks--Central Park, Riverside Park, and Morningside Park--each with its own character, bracket the neighborhood.
Incentives
No fee; furnished; utilities included (including unlimited hot water); linens and basic+ necessities (e.g. shampoo, hair dryer, kettle, coffee maker) provided.
Additional fees
Payment must be made up-front, ideally by Venmo. The landlord will require a security deposit equaling a month’s rent in addition to the rent for the month. The security deposit will be fully refunded to you when I return, provided that the apartment and its contents are undamaged. You will also need to provide ID and sign a sub-letter’s agreement to abide by the building rules (e.g. no smoking, no pets) and to leave all property as you found it.
Other info
Pets are not permitted in this unit. Additionally, it is not approved for children, as there are no child-proof guards on the windows.
