"RICH" WITH ARCHITECTURE

The townhouses on Charlton-King-Vandam are all that remains of a city plan, conceived and mapped in 1797, but almost completely developed between the years 1820 and 1829. The boundaries of this neighborhood were originally from the Hudson River (Greenwich Street) to MacDougal Street, and from Vandam to King Streets. Developed from one large estate by John Jacob Astor, this historic district was best known for the Georgian mansion "Richmond Hill" built in 1767. Richmond Hill became the residence of George Washington during the revolution and later the home of Aaron Burr. After his duel with Hamilton, Burr was forced to leave the city and sold the land and plans for development back to Astor.

As designated by the Landmarks Historic Preservation, the Charlton-King-Vandam townhouses "represent the greatest of rare and attractive Federal style townhouses." Ada Louise Huxtable, one of New York's most well-known architecture critics once referred to Charlton-King-Vandam as the "richest area" of Federal and Greek Revival townhouses.

THE RESIDENCE TODAY
Renovated in 2009, this 20 foot wide townhouse features updated electrical and plumbing, new roof, working wood-burning fireplaces, and central air on two floors. Four bedrooms, four full baths, one half bath, and incredibly wide open entertaining spaces make this townhouse uniquely loft-like.

Enter from the stoop to the parlor floor which includes a library and living room as well as two wood-burning fireplaces. The parlor floor is an open 20 x 52 expanse allowing southern light to pour in from the garden.

On the garden level there is a large formal dining room, powder room, washer-dryer, decorative fireplace, and stunning kitchen with access to the multi-level garden.

The third floor master suite includes a large bedroom with wood-burning fireplace as well as an 11-foot-deep terrace overlooking the south garden. The bedroom is joined to a dressing room and office by a palatial master bath with twin sinks and a bathtub. The fourth and top floor features two bedrooms each with en-suite full baths. The basement level includes a bedroom with full bath as well as a large outdoor space set within the rear garden bringing sunlight into the basement floor throughout the day.

From the remarkable 49-foot-deep terraced garden with multiple seating and dining areas, this townhouse truly brings the outside, inside, as the open floor plan brings the garden into view from every room. With approximately 4,720 sf including the finished basement level, this beautifully artistic and uniquely historic townhouse is currently offered for rent, furnished.
